EYFS Skills Progression

Our Early Years curriculum is carefully designed to support children in building knowledge and skills through a spiral approach, where learning is revisited, deepened and extended over time. Across all areas of provision, from water and sand play to construction, creative experiences and imaginative play, children begin by exploring materials through their senses and simple actions. They develop curiosity, begin to notice cause and effect, and use basic language to describe their experiences. These early interactions lay the foundations for communication, physical development and early mathematical understanding, as children repeatedly practise and refine their skills in meaningful contexts.

As children move into Nursery, these experiences are revisited with increasing complexity and purpose. They begin to experiment, predict outcomes and use a wider range of tools with greater control. Language develops from simple words to sentences, enabling children to describe, question and explain their thinking. They also begin to collaborate with others, create simple narratives and solve problems within their play. Across all areas, whether building structures, creating artwork or engaging in role play, children make connections between experiences and apply prior learning in new ways, demonstrating the strength of a curriculum that builds progressively over time.

By the time children reach Reception, they are able to plan, investigate and reflect on their learning with increasing independence and confidence. They use precise tools, apply subject-specific vocabulary and engage in sustained, collaborative play. Children solve practical problems, explain their reasoning and adapt their approaches, showing a secure understanding of key concepts such as measure, structure and cause and effect. This strong foundation ensures a smooth transition into Key Stage One, where children are well prepared to engage with more formal learning, bringing with them the curiosity, resilience and independence developed through our rich and carefully sequenced Early Years provision.
