Mathematics at Epsom Primary and Nursery School

We are passionate about enabling children to become confident, fluent mathematicians. Our inclusive and ambitious curriculum ensures that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and mindset to approach mathematical problems with curiosity and determination.

We follow a mastery approach built on the belief that every child is capable of understanding and succeeding in mathematics. Lessons are planned and delivered following the White Rose scheme of learning. Using small-step, carefully sequenced teaching, pupils progress fluidly through the curriculum, embedding their learning of the National Curriculum using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations of mathematical concepts.

A Mastery Approach to Teaching Mathematics

Our mastery model supports deep understanding and sustained progress. Each mathematical concept is explored through rich discussion, structured practice, and real-world application. Pupils are encouraged to reason, explain and justify their thinking using precise mathematical language.

By taking time to secure core understanding, we ensure that children build strong foundations—developing fluency, flexibility and confidence in their use of number, shape, space, and measure.

Mathematics with Purpose and Real-World Relevance

At Epsom, we nurture an appreciation for how mathematics shapes the world around us. Through zooming in and out, meaningful connections are built around nature, careers and daily life, children explore how maths is used in a range of real-world contexts. This includes hands-on opportunities and first-hand experiences that show how patterns and connections in maths relate to their lived experiences.

We foster collaborative learning and mathematical talk, encouraging children to discuss strategies, challenge assumptions and share solutions as active participants in their learning.

Inspiring Inquiry and Growth in Every Learner

We aim to nurture a love for mathematics by creating an enjoyable and inclusive environment where every child can thrive. Children are supported to be ambitious, to take risks in their learning and to approach each mathematical challenge with an inquisitive mind.

From Early Years to Year 6, our aim is to ensure that all children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, confident in their mathematical ability and empowered to see themselves as successful mathematicians.
