Writing

The ability to write effectively is a fundamental life skill. At Epsom Primary and Nursery School, we aim to provide a fully inclusive writing curriculum that enables every pupil to become a confident, creative and independent writer. Pupils are supported through careful immersion and planning to articulate their own ideas and bring these to life on the page.

CLPE’s Power of Reading is used in the teaching and planning of writing lessons, providing high-quality texts from which pupils can be inspired and supported with their own independent writing. Where possible, texts are linked to areas of wider curriculum studies providing important connections to knowledge, skills and vocabulary.

Our teaching of writing is purpose-driven, ensuring that pupils are explicitly aware of the audience and purpose they are writing for. Opportunities are given to write across the range of key writing purposes and, through careful teaching, apply the appropriate skills from the National Curriculum and the strategies necessary to achieve this. Pupils are taught to apply and embed the key skills suited to each particular writing purpose and are challenged to apply these fluently, cohesively and independently across every piece of writing.  We strive to ensure our pupils are not only ambitious but also take pride in their work.

We understand the importance in building pupils’ confidence and nurturing them as a writer. Pupils are fully immersed through drama, speaking and listening activities and are supported to plan and draft their writing carefully. Our tailored range of interventions ensures pupils are given the support they need on their writing journey.

Starting from Early Years, vocabulary and language acquisition is a key thread throughout our entire curriculum. We aim to provide and rich and stimulating language environment and ensure that pupils have a clear understanding on how to use language effectively and with purpose. Wherever possible opportunities to immerse pupils using first hand experiences is given priority. The importance of speaking and listening in the process of writing is not overlooked and forms a key part of the immersion process.

Spelling rules are taught using the Read Write Inc. scheme, providing continuation of learning from the teaching of phonics for all of our learners. The spelling of common exception words is taught within our writing lessons.
