Spanish

At Epsom Primary School, we believe that learning a language opens doors to new cultures, ideas, and opportunities. Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 in a fun and engaging way that helps children develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We have excellent and specially trained Spanish teachers from Lingotots.

Our Curriculum

Spanish is taught through interactive and practical lessons that build vocabulary and language structures progressively. Each year group revisits key topics while extending their knowledge and ability to use Spanish in real-life contexts.

Across Key Stage 2, children will explore themes such as:

  • Year 3Let’s Go!, All About Me, My Family
  • Year 4Animals, Free Time, My Home
  • Year 5Food, Clothes, Holidays
  • Year 6School, My Town, At the Café

This spiral approach allows pupils to revisit familiar vocabulary and build on it, while gradually gaining the confidence to hold short conversations, ask and answer questions, and express their ideas in Spanish.

Government Guidance and Statutory Requirements

Learning a foreign language is a statutory requirement for Key Stage 2. Our Spanish curriculum is designed to meet these expectations, ensuring pupils leave primary school with a foundation in a modern foreign language and the enthusiasm to continue language learning at secondary school.

Cultural Awareness and Enrichment

Through learning Spanish, children also gain insights into the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Songs, stories, and interactive activities make lessons lively and memorable, while promoting curiosity about the wider world.
