Music

At Epsom Primary and Nursery School, our aim is for children to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of music.  Through our engaging curriculum, children will gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing.  We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of all types of music.  We aim to ensure that children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community by giving opportunities to perform to an audience we will see children grow in confidence as performers.

Our curriculum is centred on ‘Kapow’ in which the children develop a love of music, learn to sing and play instruments.  They gain a sense of achievement through the opportunities to learn new songs and it is our aspiration that all children learn an instrument as part of a whole class percussion (percussion, recorder and glockenspiel).  Their understanding of musical language and notation is built on as they progress through the school so that our children can read music, compose and improvise.

The enjoyment of music is at the forefront of our music teaching, as it enables our children to become more self-confident and develop a respect for and an appreciation of different music genres, which reflects our diverse community.

We encourage our pupils to be ambitious and approach musical learning with an inquiring and inquisitive mind.  Our goal is to nurture a love for music through an enjoyable and inclusive learning environment where every child makes progress so that all children are ready for the next stage of their education.
