DT
DT is taught in themed units that combine designing, making, and evaluating. Children learn to use a range of tools and materials safely, applying their technical knowledge in meaningful contexts. They also develop essential life skills through cooking and nutrition projects.
Examples from our curriculum include:
- Year 1 – Cooking and Nutrition: Smoothies
- Year 3 – Structures: Constructing a Castle
- Year 5 – Cooking and Nutrition: Come Dine with Me
- Year 6 – Mechanical Systems: Automata Toys
These projects allow children to be creative and practical while learning the importance of planning, testing, and improving their designs.
Government Guidance and Statutory Requirements
Design Technology is a statutory subject within the National Curriculum. Our DT curriculum ensures children develop technical knowledge in structures, mechanisms, textiles, electronics, and food technology. It also helps pupils make connections with other subjects such as Maths, Science, and Computing.
Safeguarding and Life Skills
DT also plays an important role in safeguarding and wellbeing by teaching children how to:
- Use tools, equipment, and materials safely
- Understand healthy eating and nutrition
- Work collaboratively and solve problems in practical contexts
