Science

We believe that Science sparks curiosity, encourages questioning and equips children to make sense of the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to inspire awe and wonder, while also building the skills pupils need to think scientifically, investigate, and draw conclusions based on evidence.

Our Curriculum

Science is taught through a carefully planned programme that develops both knowledge and scientific enquiry skills. Each year group builds on prior learning, revisiting and extending key concepts as children move through the school.

Over their primary years, pupils will study topics such as:

  • ReceptionAnimal adventure, Our beautiful planet
  • Year 1Seasonal change, Everyday materials, Introduction to plants
  • Year 2Habitats, Life cycles and health, Plant growth
  • Year 3Movement and nutrition, Forces and magnets, Light and shadows
  • Year 4Digestion and food, Electricity and circuits, Sound and vibrations
  • Year 5Mixtures and separation, Earth and space, Unbalanced forces
  • Year 6Classifying big and small, Evolution and inheritance, Circulation and health

Children also take part in practical investigations such as Does hand span affect grip strength?, How does the flow of liquids compare?, and Are some sunglasses safer than others?. These enquiry-led activities encourage children to test their ideas, analyse results, and communicate findings.

Government Guidance and Statutory Requirements

Science is a core subject of the National Curriculum. We follow the statutory programmes of study, ensuring pupils are taught essential aspects of biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as working scientifically. The curriculum provides a strong foundation of knowledge, while encouraging curiosity and preparing children for the demands of secondary science.

Safeguarding and Science

Through Science, children also learn important safeguarding and health messages, such as:

  • Understanding the human body and how to keep it healthy
  • Learning about materials and substances safely
  • Developing safe working practices in experiments and investigations

This ensures pupils not only gain scientific understanding but also know how to stay safe in practical contexts and in their everyday lives.
