Assessment Policy
Mission Statement
Assessment for learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there.
Background
This policy was put together after a series of staff meetings looking at the best and most effective way of raising pupil motivation. It is embedded in the research-based principles of the Assessment reform group and the work of Shirley Clark. It focuses on
• Planning
• Sharing Learning intentions (objectives)
• Pupil self evaluation
• Feedback and marking
• Target setting
• Questioning
• Monitoring
Planning
• All National Curriculum subjects have Schemes of work (SOW) and in turn the SOW have Learning intentions (Objectives) that are unambiguous and clear
• Learning intentions are seen as a menu rather than prescriptive list
• As few activities as possible are linked to grouped LI rather than 1:1 correspondence
• Children’s performance against the LI’s is evaluated by teaching staff each half term to reconsider the planned activities for relevance. Planning will be driven by these assessments at half terms by looking at pupil progress and needs and at the end of each term through summative assessments.
• For weekly planning, LI’s and teaching activities etc need to be planned but the changes made because of assessments need to be put down
• All teaching staff will use the agreed planning format and share this with any support staff they manage within the classroom
• The school will build up an exemplary School Portfolio of work using IEPs, pupil work and QCA exemplars. This will aid teacher formative assessments each half term.
Sharing Learning intentions
• All teaching staff are expected to share learning intentions with the children
• WALT will be used by all classes as appropriate
• LI’s need to be in appropriate language for the children
• Success criteria will be created with the children and teacher. They will be made apparent to the children by using WILF
• LI and success criteria will be displayed
• Fluent writers will write the LI as the title of their work
Pupil Evaluation
• Pupils will evaluate their own work regularly
• Pupils will be encouraged to set their own targets, both short and long term.
• Pupils will be encouraged to articulate and record their evaluations of their work.
Expectations of assessment for KS1 and KS2
• All subjects will be assessed according to the cycle attached (Appendix 1 Procedure and assessment cycles for Years 1 – 6)
